    6. The Morpho genre comprises several metallic-coloured butterflies, all of which are breathtakingly beautiful. Around the world, it has been established that blue is the overall favorite colour, so it seemed natural to feature this species. Wonderfully glossy and mesmerizing in appearance, the Blue Morpho butterfly, with a wingspan of up to 8 in, can be found in Central and South America and in Mexico.

    11. Great job, pupils! So the wings of this butterfly has two colours - brown on the lower side and blue on the upper side ( when the wings are spread open wide). What we are discussing here is about how animals adapt to the environment in order to survive. Why the wings are brown in colour? Perhaps to camouflage with the greenery. Why is it blue? Perhaps its a way of attractive their mates or even preys.Nature has its way to keep the life cycle of the blue morpho butterfly going.

What are possible reasons could you come up with?

    2. Miss Dee , the scienfic name for the Blue Morpho Butterfly is Lepidoptera / morpho-peleides

A butterfly is a mainly day-flying insect of the order Lepidoptera, which includes the butterflies and moths. Like other holometabolous insects, the butterfly's life cycle consists of four parts: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Most species are diurnal. Wikipedia

Blue Morphos live in the tropical rain forests from Mexico to south America. You will most likely find the butterflies on the floors of rain forests camouflaging themselves from their predators. However, during mating season the blue morpho butterfly flies throughout the various layers of the forest. The lifespan of a Blue Morpho butterfly is a mere 115 days. During those 115 days the butterflies spend their time eating and reproducing.

The early stages of the Blue Morpho give little clue to the beauty of the adult. The caterpillar is a hairy reddish brown with brilliant leaf-shaped patches of lime-green on the back

      Facts about this animal
Adult blue morphos spend most of their time on the forest floor and in the lower shrubs and trees of the understory with their wings folded. However, when looking for mates, the blue morpho will fly through all layers of the forest and even above the treetops

The blue morpho’s diet changes throughout each stage of its lifecycle. As a caterpillar, it chews leaves of many varieties, but prefers to feed on plants in the pea family. When it becomes a butterfly it will drink its food using its long, protruding proboscis as a drinking straw to sip the juice of rotting fruit, the fluids of decomposing animals, tree sap, fungi and wet mud. Blue morphos taste fruit with sensors on their legs, and they "taste-smell" the air with their antennae, which serve as a combined tongue and nose. The blue morpho’s entire lifespan lasts only 115 day.

Blue morphos are severely threatened by deforestation of tropical forests, habitat fragmentation, and collection for the production of decorative items. Jacamar and flycatchers are the adult butterfly’s natural predators.
