The Three States of Matter And The A* Attitude Video

Hello Children,

I hope you are all inspired by the video which was shown at the canteen after recess. Nick Vujicic, the man without limbs, is truly an inspiration figure which we should all learn from. I hope to see the never-say-die attitude in all of you as well. You could watch the video of Nick Vujicic again by clicking the play button right below. Could you imagine what it feels like to be living without limbs? Are you able to foresee the challenges and problems you might have? How do you think it is possible for Nick to overcome the difficulties in life? Is it easy for him? What could you learn from him?

Today, the computer and visualizer were both not working properly so Miss Dee couldn't show you some of the interesting videos online. To watch the videos, click on the play button in Prezi presentation right below. I will be going through these slides again tomorrow.

Key Learning Points

1) Matter exist in three different states - solid, liquid and gas.
2) Solid has a definite shape and a definite volume.
3) Liquid has no definite shape but has a definite volume.
3) Gas has no definite shape and no definite volume.
4) Gas is compressible.

Looking forward to see you tomorrow!

Regards,
Miss Dee

    1. Thank you for sharing your earnest thoughts Xue Yin. I couldn't agree more with you more. He can do the things which seem impossible for him to do it. As the saying goes, nothing is impossible and when there's a will, there's always a way. All we need is a strong heart and mind to perserve and brave through the darkest storm. And Miss Dee believe that everyone in Primary 4/7 is capable of doing that.

  4. MS DEE ,IF A PAPER IS A SOLID THEN THE PAPER WAS BURNED,WILL THE PAPER STILL BE IN THE DEFINITE SHAPE OR VOLUME? OR IF THE PAPER WAS WET?

    1. A very stimulating question there, Andrew.

Yes, a piece of paper is a solid. However, when it is being burnt, the paper would be transformed into ashes or black soot. Ashes or soot are solids and they are no longer called paper.

As mention previously in class, solids tend to change its shape when a force or energy is being applied. During the burning process, heat energy is being applied which changes the shape of the paper.

Therefore, the sentence " solid has a definite shape or volume" is only true when nothing is being done unto the solid. If we apply force and break a piece of large piece of seaweed into smaller pieces, we are actually changing the shape and the volume (space occupied) by the seaweed.

A wet piece of paper is a combination of paper and water. We could see them as separate objects of matter. Paper remains as a solid even though it is now wet and soft. The shape and volume of the paper remains the same even when water is added to it.

A similar example would be a sponge with water added into it. So do we see a wetted sponge as a solid or liquid? In such cases, we need to view them as two separated matters. One (sponge) exist in a solid state while the other (water) exists in the liquid state.

Here's one thought-provoking question for all of you, including Andrew, to ponder. Have you made jelly before? Jelly is a combination of gelatin powder (solid) and water(liquid). So, what's the state of the jelly? Solid or liquid? Why?
